Tintype Photography Pop-up Studio

  • 75 Bells Road Auckland, Auckland, 2010 New Zealand (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

At selected Live Days at Howick Historical Village: Tintype Central's Pop-up Photography Studio!

Photographer Adrian Cook produces captivating images of his subjects using 100% authentic 19th-century wet plate techniques.

Using equipment and techniques developed in the 1850s, photographic plates are individually coated and sensitised in the darkroom before being exposed and developed while wet. Once fixed, washed and dried they are then coated in a gum sandarac varnish that preserves and protects them for generations.

Participating in a tintype session and watching the alchemic process as images appear on the plate, is totally captivating; an experience that few people now have the opportunity to witness. Following the session, the one-off, original portrait will be varnished before you receive it along with a complimentary digital file of your image at a later date.

Come along to learn about the wet plate collodion process on the following dates and book in for a special portrait session of your own!

Portrait sessions are $150 and include entry to the Live Day. Bookings are highly recommended as the sessions per day are limited.

Auckland Council presents the 2023 Auckland Heritage Festival with the theme of Peace, Love and Protest. We are proud to be a part of this event, and present the Ma Wai Ra’ – Film Screening.

Howick resident Taini Drummond has played an important role in East Auckland’s community, shaping the protection and preservation of te ao Māori within. Along with Tainui whakapapa, she has been Kaitiaki of Owairoa Marae for many years and faced many race-based and cultural challenges.

This documentary short film by Roimata Prendergast, poet and Storytelling Co-ordinator at Howick Historical Village, in collaboration with BRŌWNALFĀ, a pacific-women led film collective - explores Taini’s experiences in Howick, highlighting her ideas of a partnered and peaceful community; her mana and kaitiakitanga; and her fight to exist as Māori in such places that threaten to strip her identity away.  This film does not address the ancestral knowledge or discoveries of Māori but acts a resource for Māori who have ever felt ‘out of place’ or undervalued in a system underpinned by a colonial legacy.

Cost – free with entry. Adults $14, Senior/student $12, Child $6. No booking required. Open 7 Days, 10am-4pm.

In the beautiful setting of the historic Bell house, meet Helen Paul-Smith (Tapuika/Ngaiterangi), co-founder of artisan tea blenders ŌKU.

In this informal talk, delve into a sensory world, exploring the flavours and remarkable healing properties of Aotearoa’s native plants. Many of these rākau (plants) have a rich history of traditional use, helping to maintain ora (well-being). Along with more familiar herbs and ingredients, plants such as Kawakawa, Kūmarahou, Mānuka, Houhere, Akeake, Horopito, and Karamū, feature in her teas, elixirs and balms. Many of the plants used are hand-harvested and sourced in the wild, following strict protocol; OKU is conscious of being good kaitiaki (guardians) of the Whenua (land) in this emerging industry, ensuring its sustainability. Helen was Māori Women’s Development Inc Businesswoman of the Year 2022 for Sales & Marketing.

The session ends with a Q&A and the chance to sample ŌKU tea served in the Village’s vintage fine china teacups. Event duration approx. 1 hour. Tickets include entry to explore Howick Historical Village.

Pacific Frequencies: MAHU

Visit Howick Historical Village to tune into Pacific Frequencies: Mahu, a sonic exhibition highlighting Indigenous and Pacific stories of home and healing, created and developed by the all wāhine production collective BRŌWNALFĀ.

Exploring channels of urban Polynesian and Māori experiences in Tāmaki Makaurau, this immersive storytelling installation is situated in Brindle Cottage, a mid-19th century settler’s home now used for educational activities. Pacific Frequencies: Mahu features a purpose built Polynesian-themed living room from a slightly earlier era. Settle yourself into this domestic space, throw on some headphones, and flick through a world of sound and stories on an old-school radio.

Poets, musicians, and storytellers from East and South Auckland collaborated with BRŌWNALFĀ to design this soundscape-driven audio experience. Opening the discussion around story sovereignty, the exhibit delves into the Pacific diaspora, tūrangawaewae, and the ever-changing understanding of Tāmaki Makaurau's history.

This project is funded by Arts Out East, supported by Te Tuhi, Howick Local Board, and Howick Historical Village.

July 9 – August 4 (Tuesday – Sunday 10:00am - 3:00pm)

75 Bells Road, Pakuranga, Auckland, New Zealand. In Lloyd Elsmore Park. Free with admission to Howick Historical Village. Admission price: Adults $14, senior/student $12, Child $6.
