A resource for teachers in support of Social Studies and Technology. A book resource for students.

This book list has been prepared by the Howick Historical Village Education Department while under LEOTC contract to the Ministry of Education. The list will be revised and added to from time to time. First published 26/3/2002
This resource is a list of books for teachers and students and broadly covers the Victorian period encompassing :Immigration, history, invention, photography, whaling, and many other topics. Library call numbers are given for the Manukau, Auckland and North Shore libraries to facilitate ordering of the books.

BOY'S POCKETS

The New Zealand Social Studies Curriculum, Strands: Culture and Heritage. Level 2, 3. Time Continuity and Change: Level 2, 3 Resources and Economic Activities Level 2

This resource consists of a story with the items that would or could have been in a boys pocket in the 1850’s.
The story has been written using the names of people who were alive in the 1850’s, and buildings of 1850-1880 period that are now in the Howick Historical Village. Mrs Briody, William Ford, James and Bridget Gallagher: these people were alive at that time. Briody’s, Ford’s and Gallagher’s cottages, these buildings are in the Howick Historical Village. James Whites Store is a General store of the period similar to Peter Brady's General store in Panmure. First published 23/7/2002 Revised 11/10/2002. WIT AND WISDOM

Beliefs, values and accumulated knowledge have been passed on within families and communities through Proverbs and Sayings for hundreds of years. Witticisms like Proverbs and Sayings were part of everyday life. This resource consists of a collection of Proverbs, Sayings and Witticisms. There are two worksheets at the end of the resource. First published 10/10/2002.

Related resources: 'Wit and Wisdom' is complimentary to 'Customs and Superstitions,' ' The Working Day,' ' The Evening Resource' and 'Boys Pockets,' by using these resources, an insight may be obtained into the daily lives of the people of the 1840 -1880 period.

PEG DOLLS

The tradition of making Peg dolls come from a time when people had little money to spend on toys and made toys from items they had in the home. Flour bag dolls are another example of a home made toy. IMMIGRATION GAME

The New Zealand Social Studies Curriculum, Strands:Social Organisation level 4a, C& H lvl3b, TCC level 4ab R & E level 4a.

'Immigration!' is a downloadable game. The game must first be made before it can be played. The game requires Ms publisher 1997 or higher to display and print out the pages of 'How to make the game', rules, and the board on which the game will be played. Immigration ! shows what it was like to immigrate from England to New Zealand in 1850. A glossary of terms is given to increase student vocabulary. Each game can be played by up to 4 students, possibly 6. Students may be either 'Cabin' or 'Steerage' class passengers and choose their ship. A photo copier is useful to enlarge two of the A4 pages to A3 size. These make up a game board of a suitable size on which the game is played. Post game work could include diary and letter writing about the voyage.
