What is a Fencible?
Fencible comes from the word ‘defencible’ meaning capable of defense. A Fencible was a member of the Royal New Zealand Fencible Corps. These pensioner soldiers were recruited mainly from England and Ireland with the promise of a cottage and some land. They founded the villages of Howick, Panmure, Otahuhu and Onehunga. Is Fencible genealogical information available and at what cost?
Yes, the charge is NZ$1 per page.

How do I become a Volunteer?
We are always pleased to have volunteers . Volunteers still mow the lawns, tend gardens, restore and maintain the buildings, assist with education visits and act as guides on live days. Training is provided.

How do I join the Howick and Districts Historical Society?
Please phone the Howick Historical Village on 09 576 9506. We will advise you the benefits of membership and the annual membership fee.
